There was a lot that I could could skim I understood the 2 authors wanted to give us the whole history but I was interested in Pompeii itself than Roman politics I know it's sets the stageI didn't need the fictional story intertwined so I s

Theatricality was involved but Nero sang a lament to Troy as Rome smouldered Was he articulating the grief of the citizenry or was this another political ploy? No doubt it was some of bothThe authors clarify many issues including the provision of a plausible argument to answer a uestion that has plagued me for a long time What is the basis for the overt eroticism and downright debauchery depicted in some of the frescos drawings mosaics and sculptural pieces unearthed at Pompeii? Was there any understanding of romantic love? This books devotes a well researched chapter on why sexuality was portrayed as it was in both art and literature in this most phallocentric of cultures I
